The funeral for Effie was attended by everyone who could make the trip. The bulk of Lauretta's brood couldn't make it but Lauretta and Ida made the trip. Estella and her family all came up; she even brought baby Hélène with her. Léopoldine and Emma Watson also joined the mourners. They were all that was left of the original 5 ladies who kept each other company all those years ago in Roseburg.

Eugene was happy that his mother was sent off by those who loved her best. Others had wanted to come but he'd invited them to the wake after the graveside service. In truth he was worried about his father. Gilbert had eschewed his wheelchair since Effie's death, and Eugene worried that he was overexerting himself.

(tells people to call him j or jamie bc its easier, so everyone assumes his real name is james, and he doesn’t correct them)

indian hindu on his mum’s side (tamil nadu specifically)

effie comes from a rich tamil pureblood family (many pureblood families name their children something greek/latin, thus ‘euphemia’), and teaches jamie hindi, tamil and some greek

his tamil is great and he’s fluent in writing/reading as well as speaking, writing letters to effie from hogwarts in tamil

his hindi is okay, mostly with reading and talking, his writing is pretty limited

his greek is godawful and he’s barely conversational, much to effie’s dismay

(non-practicing) catholic chilean on his dad’s side

monty is (obviously) a potter, and most of his relatives live in chile or south america, but his parents moved to england for hogwarts (didn’t want him going to school on another continent to them)

he’s a practicing hindu with his mum (monty doesn’t really get it because he doesn’t speak a word of hindi so he just smiles and nods)

he speaks english and (chilean) spanish, which he teaches jamie, who speaks/reads/writes it as fluently as his english and tamil

he is heir of the noble and most ancient house of black so he’s the french-est pureblooded-est guy you’ll ever meet

especially pureblooded because he’s the product of incest (his parents are second cousins) (canon)

the black family are french, owning many estates there, etc., but have lived in england for generations (his great-grandparents migrated and now they only visit france in the summer sometimes)

catholic (receiving NOO criticism here bc this is canon (no its not)) with intense religious trauma and internalised homophobia (not projecting at all whaaaaat)

sort of converts to judaism (ish?) he makes remus explain it all and siri thinks its sooo fascinating so he gets a menorah for the dorm for hanukah and buys a torah to study and remus is so happy

speaks french as his first language, and latin and greek fluently from tutoring, but only started to learn english for hogwarts (is so bad at it in first year omg)

polish-jewish on his dad’s side (lyall was evacuated to wales in ww2, when he was about 10, and hope’s parents looked after him until he graduated hogwarts and started dating hope (they literally adored him and helped raise remus I DONT CARE))

protestant welsh on his mum’s side (didn’t really practice her faith though - just brought them all to church on christmas eve and easter sunday)

interfaith household + being a patrilineal jew (more not fitting in angst for remus guys!)

spoke english and welsh at home, equally fluent (lyall picked up welsh while living with hope’s parents), and hebrew too from his hebrew sunday school

lyall tried (and failed) to teach him polish, as that was his first language, so remus can speak a very basic amount of polish, mostly swearing and children’s lullabies (marlene teaches him more at hogwarts so they can gossip!)

not very orthodox jews, but celebrate jewish holidays and go to the synagogue on sabbath (and he wears a necklace of the star of david that belonged to lyall’s late mother)

(anglicised his name for hogwarts because everyone called him p-eye-ter (like actual pie + ‘ter’))

protestant dutch on his mum’s side (but she went to hogwarts!)

protestant english on his dad���s side

parents were ‘born again’ christians so they were very devout (grace before every meal, helping out at church every sunday, bible study every morning, etc)

peter never really believed in any of it, and would often go to jamie’s to avoid having to go

he spoke english with his dad and half-brother, but solely dutch with his mum and his other siblings. he was also taught latin before hogwarts (pureblood things) and absolutely HATED it (he was probably dyslexic and often found himself changing language in the middle of his talking exams)

picked up a fair bit of tamil from jamie and effie (aka his second mum) and absolutely LOVED the potters’ diwali party (literally the highlight of his year)

I like to think about the black cousins running away together

One day they decided the shit their parents were pulling was too much so the left

Bella, Narcissa, Sirius and Regulus decided to leave in the middle of the night of Christmas Day (Andromeda was already out with Ted)

Bella got out and decided to open a store of rare and unique items where she met another girl with a passion of talking about the lives of famous people, they are feared by people and they love each other. One time Bella decided to give Rita a very rare quill that could take notes of everything its owner wanted without the owner being present so Rita could be able to know the scandals that were happening, Rita took this as a marriage proposal and Bella was willing to let it be. They would get married but won’t have kids because they don’t have the patience for that. (Both of them are crazy enough for each other)

Narcissa would go to France for some time and start traveling around the world, one time when she was visiting Bella’s shop she would meet a cute girl who own a flower shop with her best friend, they fall in love and get married. They have two kids and a beautiful house they decided to restore because it used to be a Black family property.

Sirius was already with Remus when he ran away but he went to live with James for some time while Remus and him were looking for a place for both of them, after living with Remus for some time they got married and decided to go to different magic places in one of the places they met a little 4 year old girl with lycanthropy and no family and they decided to adopt her, they ended up living in a big house close to the city with a beautiful garden. They are a family of five, Remus, Sirius, their daughter and two dogs.

Regulus followed Sirius and ended up living with Sirius and James, by the time he already liked James but kept his distance because he didn’t believe James could like him. When Sirius left he was going to go to but James told him it was okay if they kept living together and one night when they were making dinner together James told him he loved him and Regulus was so shocked he dropped the pan where they were making their diner and burned his hand, after that they had to talk, become a couple, after a couple of years got married and now are living in the Potter manor because Monty and Effie wanted to give it to them so they could go and live by the beach. Now they adopted two kids who were biological siblings, have one dog, one cat and are very happy with their lives.

All of them reunite in their different houses where the have the crazy rich aunts, Bella and Rita; they have Alice and Narcissa who like to host and make the best reunions, they have Sirius and Remus they like to bring a lot of food, and have Sirius acting like the coach of their family; and they have Regulus and James who like to always bring presents and organize different activities for the whole family.

It was the summer before sixth year, Sirius was finally living with the Potters and everything was looking up. His nightmares were less frequent, he was sleeping more and eating an amount fit for a teenage boy. Effie was trying to teach him to cook and some of it was going in. It really seemed like the perfect summer.

Until Remus returned from France, Lyall Lupin had ministry work in Marseille for almost five weeks, meaning that Sirius hadn’t seen Remus in over a month. He did notice that he didn’t care as much about not seeing Pete for over a month but shrugged it off as a canine camaraderie thing.

When Remus popped out of the grand fireplace in the drawing room, Sirius was speechless. Remus, with his sandy hair and his pink cheeks, was now all shades of bronze. He had freckles.

James seemed to sense that they’d be getting no sense out of Sirius for a little while, “Fuck, Moony. You’re all… Did you just lie under the sun the whole time?”

“Reading in the sun is the best way to spend a summer.” Remus looked curiously at Sirius. “Maybe not if you’re as pale as you, Pads. You’d just burn.”

“He’d go a glorious pink!” James said proudly. “Want a cuppa?”

“Yeah, I’d love one. Thanks, Prongs.” Remus dropped his bag onto the floor by the sofa as James bustled off to make the tea. “Pete not here yet?”

Sirius shook his head trying to tear his eyes away from Remus’ face, “Nah, he’s getting here about six. His mum has a thing or something.”

Remus nodded, “How’s your summer been? Hope you didn’t miss me too much.”

“Honestly, best summer ever.” Sirius finally relaxed, “I still don’t feel like it’s real. I keep expecting to wake up back at Grimmauld Place.”

“You never need to wake up there again,” Remus said softly, and Sirius smiled at him. “Thanks for writing to me, by the way. Not that being in Marseilles wasn’t great, but Dad had work and then with Mum having to go back and care for Nana, it was lonely.”

“Oh, no problem. Thanks for writing back. Hope it didn’t interrupt your tanning sessions.”

“Do I really look that different?” Remus chewed on the side of his lip.

“You’re all… bronze. Your hair, your face. It’s wild. Your scars being paler than your skin is weird. In a good way!” He added hastily, “It suits you.”

“Well, thanks.” Remus could feel his face growing even darker. “It’s a shame we’re about to go back to Scottish Autumn.”

“You could find one of those muggle squirty tans.”

Remus chuckled, “Nah, I don’t think that’s for me. I’ll just fade back to pale Remus and it’ll be like it never happened.”

Sirius tried to understand why he didn’t like that thought. He liked this new confident, smiling Remus. Would that also fade with the tan? Or was that just a consequence of spending several weeks alone in France? The thought that maybe he’d met a nice French girl made his stomach churn. It would explain a lot about the way Remus carried himself now.

James came back with a tea tray. “Mum and Dad are out tonight, but Mum made us dinner before she left so we won’t starve.”

“Hey, I can cook now!” Sirius snapped, to Remus’ surprise.

“Making pasta bake and egg fried rice is not the same as being able to cook.” James sighed.

“But it’s more than you can do, Prongs.” Remus smiled at Sirius. “And you’ve lived with your mum for sixteen and a half years.”

“Ugh, I should have known you pair of dogs would start ganging up on me within minutes of getting here.” James poured the tea into three mugs carefully. “Just wait until Lily starts spending time with us, then I’ll have someone on my side.”

“Firstly, you wish, and secondly, bold of you to assume she wouldn’t side with Moony.” Sirius gestured at him, “Especially when he looks like this!”

James gave him a strange look before turning back to Remus, “How were the French girls?” He waggled his eyebrows, “Any French stories to tell?”

Remus said nothing, but a smile teased at one corner of his mouth, and Sirius suddenly panicked. He picked up his mug and took a sip, even though it was way too hot. “Don’t hassle the man, James. Just because you’re not getting any!”

“Oh, because you are?” James said, at the same time Remus nodded at him in silent thanks. “Honestly, Moony, can you teach Sirius to be better at silencing charms while you’re here?”

Sirius choked on his tea.

Friday snips

Thanks to @snarky-magpie the tag! It is well and truly Sunday here in Australia but I'm a sucker for a snippet so here we go. A little glimpse of the next chapter of Object Permanence after a pretty brutal cliffhanger. This is a flashback to the early years of Sirius and James from the perspective of my beloved Euphemia Potter.

Potter Manor, Scotland – 1972

That Christmas during their Second Year at Hogwarts, Sirius came to stay for the first time. His family was in France and had left him behind at school. He seemed delighted by this turn of events.

She pretended to believe Sirius when he told her Walburga and Orion had agreed to let him visit, uncomfortable with the idea of abandoning him to that draughty castle when he so clearly wanted to be at Potter Manor. 

Turning a blind eye was the greatest gift she gave James that year. James insisted that Sirius sleep in his room and she heard them laughing and plotting late into the night. She could tell that Sirius was on his best behaviour; he was unfailingly well-mannered at the dining table – a product of years of training under the hawkish eye of Walburga. The problem was he was incapable of maintaining this good behaviour outside of mealtimes. 

The first night Sirius stayed, Effie asked him over dinner whether his family had any Christmas traditions that he would like them to include in their celebration.

Sirius winkled his nose in distaste. “You have met my family, right?”

Effie glared at Monty when he snorted into his soup.

“Yeah, Mum,” James added. “I don’t think a mounted House Elf head would look good above the stockings.”

Sirius grinned at him. “Maybe we could put antlers on it.”

“Or a Santa hat,” Monty added, earning himself another glare. 

Effie turned her attention to Sirius again. “Well, when do you usually do presents?” 

Sirius blinked at her uncomprehendingly. He glanced at James, as if requiring a translation. When James noticed his confusion, his face fell. 

Sirius immediately turned back to Effie, eager to smooth over the situation. “Uh,” he said quickly. “In the morning.”

“Good,” she said softly, her heart twisting at the transparent lie. “We do that too.”

Sirius looked relieved that he had gotten the answer right. Something within her thawed slightly - at least until the following morning he and James managed to unearth a cursed suit of armour from the East Wing that trampled her winter vegetable patch.
